Secret Song Series

I'm sure every songwriter has songs they have recorded and, for whatever reason. they get tucked away and saved for later. As songwriting is an ongoing endeavor, sometimes these "secret songs" gather in our private stashes and eventually are rediscovered, often to be seen and heard in a new light. This series will reveal some of the songs in my secret collection.

Episode 3: "Guru"

Recorded at The Magic Shop, NYC.

I had made an album called 'Clouds Over Eden' that was very intense for me. The songs were super personal, and it somehow took a lot out of me. After that album and tour, I needed a break, and started working with other artists, as producer or collaborator, and put aside my own music for a while.

Then, I was asked to contribute a track to the wonderful tribute to Harry Nilsson project. That is when I met Steve Rosenthal, the owner of The Magic Shop recording studio and a fine producer. After bringing a few different projects to the Magic Shop, Steve mentioned to me that it was about time that I start recording some of my own new songs. He got me excited about trying new things.

This song, "Guru", was maybe the first one we started building together. I had the song written, but we started developing an intricate arrangement and beat, using various analogue and early digital synths and samplers. Omg it was so much fun. I played all the guitars, the electric sitar, and Mellotron and Steve did the very detailed programming. Deep Singh played the percussion and beautiful tablas. The awesome Lisa Haney, who had toured with me after 'Clouds Over Eden', played the cello.

It was a magical time, and a magical session. I hope you enjoy it!

GURU - Lyrics
(Words and Music by Richard Barone)

You used to be so cool
you filled the room, filled the room
Now you sit and stare
you’re off the air, off the air
The lights inside your head
they went from green to red, green to red
the changes you’ve been through —
it’s up to you, up to you

Now is the time, now is the true
and I will be your guru
If life is a crime I’ll pay the fine
but let me be your guru

You don’t have to say
you lost your way, lost your way
And you don’t have to know
all you know, anyway
The voices in your head
that say you’re better off dead
they’re better off dead

Now is the time, now is the true
and I will be your guru
If life is a crime I’ll pay the fine
but let me be your guru

I wanna sail through your mind.
I wanna sail till I reach the shore I seek to find.

Let everything be clear
Never fear, never fear
take me by the hand

You’re gonna understand, understand
the music in your head,
the things I’ve said, things I’ve said
The world may see through you —
I’m gonna see you through, I’m gonna see you through

Now is the time, now is the true
and I will be your guru
If life is a crime I’ll pay the fine
but let me be your guru.
