I'm sure every songwriter has songs they have recorded and, for whatever reason. they get tucked away and saved for later. As songwriting is an ongoing endeavor, sometimes these "secret songs" gather in our private stashes and eventually are rediscovered, often to be seen and heard in a new light. This series will reveal some of the songs in my secret collection.
Episode 5: "The World of Tomorrow"
This installment of my Secret Song Series is a little different, because I wrote it just as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning. I've been writing quite a lot during the this period, and these songs may end up on my next album. This was the first one I wrote, in March, when New York was beginning to completely lock-down. It was, and still is, a strange and unsettling time here in the City, and I'm so sad for the many lives lost and those who got so ill. I dedicate all the songs I've written during this period to them.
The lyrics are stream of consciousness, random thoughts that came to my mind as I strummed the chords, lost in thought and in isolation. The basic performance you hear was from a daily song performance I was doing on live social media, recorded on my iPhone. Then, I added more instruments, harmonies, and arrangement elements on my laptop.
Next month I will release another song here on Bandcamp in my #SecretSongSeries.
lyrics
The World of Tomorrow
(Barone)
I got lost thinking “where have I been?”
I been good, I been bad, and both were a sin
Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise
Everybody wants a piece of me
The full force of the government
Don’t mean nothing when the money’s spent
Hope is hope when all is lost
But I wonder who will pay the cost
in the world of tomorrow
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Seize the Day, Seize the day
Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa
Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa
Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa
Seize the Day, Seize the day
I got lost thinking “what have I done?”
I been right, I been wrong, and nobody won
The Obscure Object of my Desire
Everybody gets down to the wire
The full force of the C.I.A.
Has been revealed and they have nothing to say
Hope’s still hope when all is lost
And I wonder who will pay the cost
in the world of tomorrow
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Seize the Day, Seize the day
Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa
Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa
Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa
Seize the Day, Seize the day
Ohhhhhhhh............
make it raw! make it raw!
make it real! make it raw!
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
in the world of tomorrow
Whoa
Whoa
Whoa
in the world of tomorrow
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Ay Yi Yi Yi
Seize the Day, Seize the day
